Chinese CultureLinear Logic vs. Holistic Logic
The Chinese written language is a collection of pictures. This is quite different from the Western written language that is formed by linear sequences of letters. The Chinese “picture language” provides insight into Chinese thinking. You will find they like to process information “holistically”—looking at the “big picture” instead of individual details.
Conversely, Western thought is dominated by linear logic.
Early philosophers, who saw a paradoxical balance of opposite in all things, influence Chinese thinking. Where Westerners look for clear alternatives (option A instead of option B), Chinese may examine ways to combine both option A and option B. This difference in approach can make a Westerner think a Chinese negotiator is being illogical, evasive or devious, while they believe they are being quite straightforward.
The workshop also covers topics such as Censure; Insiders & Outsiders; Ageism & Sexism; Lucky Numbers & Colours; Gifts; Chinese Names and Working Life in China. |
